I've decided to write small articles on nations of Dominions 4 as I feel they are awesome enough to warrant them. Unfortunately I do not know how to upload and embed pictures at the moment so it will be a bit text heavy for the moment.
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!
Early Age Ulm is a nation based loosely on the Germanic Tribes subjugated by Romans with elements of Conan the Barbarian and Nordic Sagas mixed in. Frankly I find them to be one of my favorite nations and find myself rooting for them even when I am playing against them. The reason being that in a world where many nations have abundant and frightening magic powers, giants, demons, and demigods at their beck and call, Ulm simply has only their steel and the strength to wield it backing them up.
Even against other human nations they find themselves strained as Ulmish men are not the sharpest tools in the shed. They believe that shields and arrows are unmanly and that real men dash at their enemy carrying as many weapons as they can hold while shouting their battle cry. Sneaking up on the enemy and stabbing them in the shower is also acceptable. This creates a situation where women warriors are the actual backbone of your forces because they are willing to adapt and innovate. They don't mind using bows to fight as long as the enemies are dead and they also don't mind being shield maidens proudly holding the line and covering their allies from arrow fire. Why Ulmish men never find the idea that cowering behind their wives and daughters while using them as shields is an unmanly action is a mystery that may never be solved. There is also the Steel Maiden who is a monster in combat, lore wise they are the toughest and most aggressive ladies in Ulm, taught to use their bravery in combat by screaming and charging into battle with as many swords as they can hold, again Ulm training and tactics are a little single minded. The most powerful of all your troops are the Steel Warriors. Living Conan the Barbarian References, they tear enemies apart and are your elite palace guard. The biggest advantage of Ulmish armies however is that they can build many male warriors outside their fortresses as well as their commanders along with the ability to move twice as fast across the map compared to many other ground based armies. This gives them the feel of a tribal society with some major towns as well as making them a terrifyingly maneuverable force.
Beyond this they're pretty simplistic. Look, they invented steel people and they get beaten on by giants that find them tasty all the time, you should really give them some slack in the magic department! They are focused on crafting items (read trinkets), this might not seem that great as giving a human a magical weapon is not exactly the same as giving a demigod that same weapon but their magical items can aid them to cast bigger spells and open new options. Of course other nations can do the same but Ulm gets a discount when making them. Other than their crafting Ulm focuses on buffing their troops with extra strength and taking advantage of their wide but shallow knowledge of many elemental magics while the enemy freezes the entire battlefield in a sheet of ice or drops a hailstorm of rocks onto them.
If you feel like commanding a legion of sneaky Conans bent on glory with many more practical women warriors backing them up, EA Ulm might be the nation for you.

To the end of his days, the young men and women of Ulm would ask Warhendis, the God Slayer, what happened at the Bridge of Ascension
And to the end of his days, his answer was always the same:
"Men did this."
And that answer was enough.
