So for a few hours I have played Duelyst, an online TCG that has given me more enjoyment than many others. The reason why I am making this article is to speculate why I enjoy it so much.
1. Emphasis on placement and threat ranges: While I do love this as a person who enjoys many games based on positioning (except chess, that can jump into a creek for all I care), an extra mechanic to mull over during your opponent's and your own turns also helps a lot to reduce frustration. One of my biggest problems with TCG's is the snowball of agony. That is when you can not seemingly win but continue to play due to sportsmanship or a very slim chance at victory. This is a purgatory that is unpleasant and drags on too long for any amount of time. With an emphasis on positioning in basic gameplay, there is something to distract you from feelings of helplessness and growing bitter anger that happens when you are losing badly (believe me, if you have played a MOBA you would understand).
2. Easy turnarounds: There are a lot of ways to turn a game around making it easier to play longer since you could very well find a path to an upset victory if you look carefully enough and play with enough skill.
3. It's short: This is a huge deal as the average match is around ten minutes. That snowball of agony has even less of a chance to build because of the short time. If you are ever truly in an unwinnable scenario it will at least be brief.
4. Draw 2 cards a turn: incredibly good for comebacks and aggressive play as you now have quite a few options available to win even when you are top-decking (your card draw for the turn is the only cards in your hand)
Overall I think I enjoy the game due to its careful design in the pacing of each match as much as the emphasis on positioning (I do love strategy games after all).
