The reasons I love Legend of the Galalctic Heroes has nothing to do with it being anime. Frankly anime gets me sick to my stomach with how inbred it currently is. But long ago, in the 80's to 90's anime was a new way for artists to express themselves especially as Japanese economic bubble grew and burst in that time period. Anime was a somewhat new art form attracting talented people attempting to experiment. Various shows appeared that threw off previous conventions of it just being kid's stuff: this I would say would be one of the best times in anime from a writing standpoint. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is not a good anime, it is a great show due to the grand scope and ambition of the project along with its execution. Its goal is to tell of a large scale galactic war with call backs to Napoleon, Prussia, and star wars. Not the mix I thought would work but it works rather marvelously. The fleet battles are likened to Napoleonic line battles, there are also fighter pilots in the fleets with pilot suits that are a not so subtle reference to star wars, even the boarding actions take inspiration from Warhammer 40k with power armored badasses cleaving each other to pieces with battleaxes. The soundtrack is old symphony music such as the Light Cavalry Overture and it works with the idea of line battles in space. I wish they had actual army marching music as well but they deigned not to use it Now that I have briefly gone over what it is I will go over the negatives. For one its slow beyond slow, with 110 episodes they never feel rushed which is good from an informative standpoint but tiring for the viewer. Second, parts of the story oversimplifies issues, for other stories this in not so bad but for one aiming for a large scale war little details add up quickly to make rather large annoyances. In other words its no War and Peace or various other civil war movies made in the U.S. The story can also be predictable, you will be able to mouth the next events at times making it tedious to watch the build up for an event you already know the outcome. Now that might sound really bad but I feel its necessary to go over all my dislikes of a show before finishing a recommendation for it. If your a fan of scifi and wanted a show that gives you a large scale and long running war from multiple perspectives, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is worth an attempt. For now I will leave off with footage of a trailer for the series youtu.be/G7grjXe2Eyo

As I stated previously I believe, I usually despise anime but provided this doesn't have the "usual" *shudders in disgust* shit or idiotically hyper dexterous robots then I too might actually look into this... might... Also, anything that takes inspirations from 40k clearly has some good taste.

This is my absolute favorite Anime show ever and one I love to this day. I hate Anime these days (used to love it as a teenager, though it might've just been better then). I can't recommend this enough really, Samt covered all the negatives of it pretty well. This series is a true space opera, the epic battles feel extra epic thanks to the Classical Music. The scale of these battles is quite massive, 2,000 ships is considered a small force. It's not really a war of good vs evil either, more of a Good guys and some assholes vs some other Good guys and some assholes. There are two movies that are a good place to start In my opinion personally. First one is: "My Conquest is a Sea of stars" which is kinda of a prequel to the main series which takes place just a few months after the events in this move. The second one is "Overture to a New War" Which is a remake of the first 2 episodes of the series with some extra scenes tying in with the events from the other movies I mentioned. Also there are two versions of this series, the original and a "remastered" version. The remastered version is really the better one to watch as the animation quality is much better. Most of the dubs you'll find are of the remastered version anyways Also, SPACE PRUSSIA! It's like Prussia, but in space! which is awesome.

I have managed to watch the first six episodes and I can say that it certainly looks promising. Definitely manages to avoid at least most of the shit in the majority of anime that makes me gag in disgust and seems to have a diverse amount of characters. So far this shows promise... So far...
