I felt like putting this thread up because this section was empty at the time. Dominions 4 is a rather expansive strategy game made by Illwinter Game Design. It is rather fascinating from even a design standpoint as it decides to ignore many features found in many other strategy games in order to make others in-depth.
While another game would give your mage an ability to cast a fireball after enough research, Dominions 4 would force you to get that spell by researching a area of magic which will give you access to many other spells to do this, also requiring a certain percentage of your mage corps to research to get that spell in a timely manner. The fire mage himself will suffer for his ability to wield fire magic by having a much shorter lifespan, causing him to become a geriatric with more limited abilities to cast spells and move around in general. Even when the spell is cast it causes more than the immolation of a target. If the enemy should survive he will be fatigued from exposure to such heat and will have lessened combat abilities unless he rests, he might get permanent afflictions such as losing an arm and a leg, and his buddies in his division will be less eager to attack afterwards, lessening their ability to charger into a wall of spears.
Plus there is such variation in units, nations and magic. I mean just look at this

Spider riding African Warriors backed up by fishmen, undead elephants, and pygmies firing flaming arrows against frost giants from Niefelheim. That's the kind of game this is. A game where an angel called forth from Pythium (aka Byzantium) can grab a flaming sword and put on a horned helmet to kill cthulu rising from the ocean depths. Altogether it's an insane and in depth game about gods leading nations against each other to become the master of the universe. Would you expect anything less from them?
