So, Witcher 3 has been out for about 5 months now. Do we have any other W3 players here and if so, what's your verdict?
Personally, as a whole, I think the game is absolutely fantastic, one of the best RPGs I have played (I don't care how you define RPG, shut up! ).
It does have a lot of small things I don't like, some of which can be fixed by using mods.
So, first off, the good.
+ Atmosphere and the world. Love the dark, realistic way the world is portrayed. After all, there is a war going on, not to mention all kinds of beasts.
+ Music. Oh my god, is it good. The eastern european style of music fits in perfectly. (Well, it is a Polish book & game series so, no wonder...)
(The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Top 10 Soundtrack)
+ Open world. This is what the series needed! The ability to go around, just being a witcher instead of following such a strict path as in the earlier games is fantastic.
+ NPCs. I find it astounding how much variety there is in the looks of different NPCs. Of course, the "extras" are reused, but usually if you can talk to an NPC, he looks unique.
+ Length. I've played W3 for 64 hours and I don't think I'm even at the half way point through the main quest. There's just so much to do.
+ Death march difficulty. Trust me on this. If you want a GREAT Witcher 3 experience, play it on the hardest difficulty setting. It's hard in the beginning of the game, but it balances out quickly. Combat is also much more interesting.
+ Story. Not much to say, it's great and so are many of the side quest stories as well.
There's much more, that I can't remember atm.
The Bad.
- Witcher gear. Stupid decision to include upgradable Witcher gear, because the rest of the gear in the game (there's A LOT of them) become useless, because Witcher gear tends to be always better. I recommend quitting using Witcher gear as soon as possible.
- Quest rewards. Doing a level 25 quest at level 22 should give one a good reward, right? Instead, 90% of the time you get something completely useless. Like a lvl 18 sword.
- Some quests. Witcher series has had some of the worst quests I have ever seen (that swamp quest in W1 where you have to run from one end to the other about 6-7 times for example). Not so bad in W3, but there are some quests that I've hated because it's just been one "Oh, I could do that but I need you to do this first" stages.
- Potion use. I HATE THE NEW SYSTEM! In Witcher 2 for example, you needed to meditate to use potions. Of course, you couldn't do this mid-combat, so you had to prepare (you know, just like in the books). The potion duration was then of course longer, 20min or so. In W3, you can use potions mid-combat, which only last for 30 seconds (regular potions).
- Controls. Controls took me awhile to get used to, or not so much the controls but trying to hit the enemy I wanted if there were more than 1. Not a big deal.
All in all, definitely my pick for the Game of the Year title.
